Increase in Female Entrepreneurship according to GEM Report for 2007

The 2007 report also shows a significant increase in the number of women entrepreneurs, with womens entrepreneurial activity rising to 5.9% in 2007 from 4.2% in 2006.

 

The Irish Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report for 2007 found that Ireland continues to be one of the leading EU countries in terms of early stage entrepreneurship.
Overall, the research found that 8.2% of the adult population living in Ireland is engaged in entrepreneurial activity, an increase on the 2006 level of 7.4%.

One of the co-authors of the report, Paula FitzSimons (photo) will act as M.C. for the National Women's Enterprise Day on Wednesday 26th November 2008. She is a recognised expert on entrepreneurship, has been the national coordinator for the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) for Ireland since 2000. Most recently, she has been an expert facilitator to the Small Business Forum and subsequently advised Forfás and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on the development of a national entrepreneurship policy.

She is currently the national director of Going for Growth, a new pilot initiative, which is focused on peer support as a means of assisting women entrepreneurs who wish to grow their businesses. The development of this latest initiative was sponsored by the NDP Gender Equality Unit of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, which received EU funding, and its implementation is being supported by Enterprise Ireland.
